Current Space in Baltimore, MD is trying to raise $ for their new darkroom and photo programs/classes/lectures. I am so excited to see an emerging platform in Baltimore to help photographers. “Current Space is excited to announce plans to build a black and white community darkroom and will be having a one night only slide show and exhibition of Baltimore photographers titled, “Good Light” on November 16th, 2012. The exhibition intends to raise awareness for the darkroom and launch a kickstarter to raise the remaining funds needed for build out. In 2013 Current will start a photography programming initiative that will include classes, workshops, lectures and a critique group.
Alex Heilner, the Associate Dean for Design and Media at MICA and winner of this year’s Baker Artist Award will start off the evening by giving a forty-minute lecture about his photography. Prior to MICA he was the Director of Photography at JCC in Brooklyn, NY, which included overseeing a black and white darkroom.
Current Space is an artist-run gallery, studio, and a headquarters for cultural production. Current Space is committed to showcasing, developing, and broadening the reach of artists locally and internationally.”

“Hamiltonian is proud to present Call Collect, a three week long exhibition featuring original works of art by 100 emerging and established contemporary artists from the greater DC metro area. For Call Collect, Hamiltonian asked its growing network of fellows, mentor-artists, and friends to nominate their artist peers to participate in the exhibition and a special collector’s night . Call Collect is a unique opportunity for Hamiltonian to highlight artistic talent outside of its fellowship program and honor the careers of other artists from DC’s vibrant contemporary art scene.
Call Collect will run from October 20th through November 9th with a closing reception on Friday, November 9th from 7-9pm. On October 18th, Hamiltonian Artists hosted a special benefit during which 100 guests had the opportunity to preview the exhibit and choose one of the works of art in Call Collect for their private collection.
Participating artists include current members and alumni of the Hamiltonian Fellowship program, the WPA’s Artist Directory, 52 O Street Studios, Flux Studios, Red Dirt Studios, the DCCAH Art Bank, Mid City Artists, MICA and Corcoran alumni as well as established artists represented by CONNERSMITH., G Fine Art, Hemphill Fine Arts, Addison/Ripley Fine Arts and Project 4 Gallery.

Thirty one artists – all graduates of the New World School of the Arts high school and college will unite for one exhibition in Miami called “Young Blood: Homecoming 2012”, curated by John Witty 05’. This is the fifth installment of Young Blood, an annual fundraiser exhibition featuring NWSA high school and college alumni founded by program graduate, Michelle Gomez 08’. The exhibition runs from August 4 through August 25th at the Artseen Gallery with an opening reception during Wynwood’s Second Saturday artwalk, August 11th, 6-9pm. A portion of the sales will benefit the NWSA high school and college visual arts department, which helped shape and develop the artistic talents of this group. Download the press release here.

BrickHaus Art Space Organizes Exhibition of Artworks by Recent MICA Graduates
Induction is on view from July 7 – 28 at BrickHaus Art Space, 2602 Greenmount Ave., Baltimore, Maryland
BrickHaus Art Space presents Induction, a juried exhibition of works by 15 recent graduates of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Jurors Adam Farkas, Kyle Freeman, and Ben Graham-Putter selected the works from the 2012 Commencement Exhibition at MICA. To be eligible, artists had to register for jurying the week before MICA’s Artwalk, an event where art-lovers, and collectors come together to meet artists and view incredible artwork by nearly 400 graduating seniors.
“The idea came naturally to us. Here we have 400 of the nation’s freshest and most talented artists all in one place. Selecting works during ArtWalk presented us (the jurors) with the unique opportunity not only to view works in person, but also to talk with the artists about their techniques and processes,” says juror Kyle Freeman, Gallery Manager at Maryland Federation of Art.
“Our idea for this show was to Induct young artists from MICA into the art world and help them continue their momentum as they transition into life after school.” Says Ben Graham-Putter, Co-Founder of BrickHaus

“Viewers will be invited to watch a silent and awkward interaction between a couple eating at the dinner table. This performance is titled after the first photograph in her latest series, Conversations with my therapist. This performance will allow viewers to reflect on their own heartbreaking experiences and nerve-wracking dinners to promote betterself-understanding and self-acceptance. This is Michelle’s second performance featured at the Hillyer Art Space as part of their Soapbox performance art series. What a lovely evening full of amazing discussions about art, gender, self image, society, religion and hip hop. I met so many great artists, poets and musicians. It is so satisfying to share my most personal and honest artwork and to have people appreciate that. It sparks conversation and allows me to engage with others in a way that I have never felt before. Washington, DC- It’s getting hot out, and with summer comes festivals. In celebration of the first year of the performance art series Soapbox, Hillyer Art Space is excited to present BLOWOUT! On June 16, 2012, 1-8pm, please join us for a day-long festival of performance art, bringing back past Soapbox artists as well as new performers, featuring more than fifteen performances throughout the day. The participating artists were asked to consider summer itself as a departure point in the pieces they perform at the festival. Performances will include Kristina Bilonick and DC Cheer!, Eleanor Barba, Carolyn Becker, Patricia Brace, Bradley Chriss, Chanan Delivuk, Michelle Gomez, Ginny Huo, Emma Jaster, Carolina Mayorga, René Medrano, Kunj Patel, Paul Shortt, Vincent Valerio, Jonathan Wille, Samantha Wilson, Kool Raunch Collective, and Swedish/Danish performance artist Annika B. Lewis. Full schedule to be announced.Soapbox is a monthly performance art series at Hillyer Art Space which seeks to increase exposure to this underrepresented form in DC. In its first year of programming, we’ve seen ten fantastic Soapbox events, and a tremendous outpouring of support from a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund Soapbox. Through the funds we raised, we have been able to continue Soapbox as a donation-only event, as aspect of the series which is critically important to our mission to provide accessibility to performance art in DC. Admission to BLOWOUT! will likewise be donation only, $10 suggested.

Post-Graduation plans
- I graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art on Monday, May 14!
- It is my pleasure to let you know that I have been accepted into the Curatorial Practice Graduate program at the Maryland Institute College of Art. I will be attending this amazing program next Fall and will graduate in 2014. I am very excited to continue curating exhibitions, plan programs and much more!
- I am now the newest member of the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) at the Maryland Art Place. Through this committee, I will propose new programs, review exhibition proposals and promote art to younger audiences.
- I am the Programming and Outreach intern for the Station North Arts & Entertainment DIstrict.
- As the founder and director of Young Blood, we are currently planning the fifth annual New World School of the Arts alumni exhibition in Miami, FL.
I want to thank all of my friends, family and colleagues for supporting me in my endeavors throughout my college career. Your encouragement and enthusiasm means the world to me! I am so excited to focus on my curatorial career while I continue exploring my new love for digital photography.
