Dear friends and colleagues,

I would like to encourage all Baltimore “Creative Minds” to apply for a new and exciting program I am producing in partnership with Maryland Art Place (MAP) called THIRTY: 30 Creative Minds Under 30.

THIRTY: 30 Creative Minds Under 30 is a year long series of monthly talks featuring thirty emerging Baltimore artists under the age of thirty. All of the participants use a diverse range of creative practices, from visual art to performance, curatorial, community art, design, film, photography and technology to create visual experiences. Every month 2‐3 creative minds will convene to present their perspectives on current cultural trends and how that plays into their practice, use of media and outcomes. Members of the Program Advisory Committee (PAC); Michelle Gomez, Briony Hynson and Joe Letourneau will be thematically grouping artists from different fields. PAC members and the Maryland Art Place staff will mentor selected artists on the development of their presentation to ensure a professional, clear and accessible presentation. This program will premiere on March 6th, 2013 at 6pm at MAP.

MAP is currently seeking applications from young creative minds who are interested in participating in this program. To apply, please answer the questions in the attached call for entry and e-mail your information to Sofia Rutka at sofia@mdartplace.org by January 2, 2013.

What a lovely evening full of amazing discussions about art, gender, self image, society, religion and hip hop. I met so many great artists, poets and musicians. It is so satisfying to share my most personal and honest artwork and to have people appreciate that. It sparks conversation and allows me to engage with others in a way that I have never felt before. I am thrilled to hear that my work inspires you to love yourself and be true to yourself. Thank you for coming to the opening and sharing your personal stories with me!

BLOWOUT! DC Performance Art Festival
Hillyer Art Space, 9 Hillyer Ct NW, Washington, DC 20001
Saturday, June 16, 1-8pm

Washington, DC- It’s getting hot out, and with summer comes festivals. In celebration of the first year of the performance art series Soapbox, Hillyer Art Space is excited to present BLOWOUT! On June 16, 2012, 1-8pm, please join us for a day-long festival of performance art, bringing back past Soapbox artists as well as new performers, featuring more than fifteen performances throughout the day. The participating artists were asked to consider summer itself as a departure point in the pieces they perform at the festival. Performances will include Kristina Bilonick and DC Cheer!, Eleanor Barba, Carolyn Becker, Patricia Brace, Bradley Chriss, Chanan Delivuk, Michelle Gomez, Ginny Huo, Emma Jaster, Carolina Mayorga, René Medrano, Kunj Patel, Paul Shortt, Vincent Valerio, Jonathan Wille, Samantha Wilson, Kool Raunch Collective, and Swedish/Danish performance artist Annika B. Lewis. Full schedule to be announced.

Soapbox is a monthly performance art series at Hillyer Art Space which seeks to increase exposure to this underrepresented form in DC. In its first year of programming, we’ve seen ten fantastic Soapbox events, and a tremendous outpouring of support from a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund Soapbox. Through the funds we raised, we have been able to continue Soapbox as a donation-only event, as aspect of the series which is critically important to our mission to provide accessibility to performance art in DC. Admission to BLOWOUT! will likewise be donation only, $10 suggested.

The final line-up and complete schedule will be available online on the facebook event page, and on http://www.artsandartists.org/hillyer/events-soapbox.html.
Cycles is a group exhibition featuring works by Ellen Burchenal’s Senior Thesis class. All of the artists were commissioned to create small artworks in response to the word, “Cycles”. This exhibition explores repetition in a variety of occurrences. The conscious effort of producing the art itself becomes a tool to examine why cycles repeat themselves. Whether these artists find inspiration from repetitive patterns in nature, families, relationships or physical processes; they all share the universal longing to examine their own relationships to objects in order to promote better self-understanding.
